A designer and photographer based out of Calgary, Alberta, Chris Amat
has documented the expansive terrain of Canada with breathtaking
results. A native of the area, Chris knows that the city has much to
offer beyond its stunning landscape, and he desires to showcase the many
sides of this versatile, metropolitan city.
What
began as a Mounted Police outpost in the 19th century has developed
into a major international metropolis that is home to diverse industries
and cultural expressions. Boasting a strong outdoors sports following,
Calgary is also home to numerous international festivals and events.
Chris explains that he has “watched the city transform…into the vibrant
city that it is becoming. Set between the prairies and the astounding
Rocky Mountains, Calgary is a thriving city with multiple attractions.
No longer just a city for the cowboys and the oil executives, Calgary’s
cultural scene now boasts of world-class cuisine, entertainment, arts,
and music. Calgary depicts urban lifestyle at its best, while still
owing its relaxing charm and beauty to the surrounding landscape.”
Recently
commissioned by Tourism Calgary to document local hotspots, Chris’
images below feature his favorite coffee shops, boutiques, and other
destinations in Calgary. Read on to learn more about his hometown
recommendations and to see his beautiful images of the city, all edited
using VSCO Film®.

Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar

“With an ever-growing coffee scene in Calgary, Gravity has remained one of my favorites, always serving up a perfectly-brewed Phil & Sebastian coffee.
From the local art on the walls to the house-made scones, Gravity has a
very local and community-focused atmosphere — perfect for enjoying a
finely crafted cappuccino.”

BOXWOOD Cafe

“Located in the central Beltline district of Calgary, BOXWOOD
is a casual, no-reservations-required dining experience. Using seasonal
ingredients from as close to home as possible, and carefully chosen
suppliers not just for their quality, but also for their commitment to
raising food naturally, the BOXWOOD chefs create a truly authentic
culinary experience. Eating and drinking on the BOXWOOD patio surrounded
by remarkable flowers in a park setting is the perfect way to spend a
summer afternoon.”

North American Quality Purveyors

“From the moment you walk into North American Quality Purveyors,
you feel as if you have been transported to the backcountry of Canada.
Locally-owned and dedicated to stocking only Canadian and American-made
men’s apparel, North American Quality Purveyors carries a very distinct
aesthetic and appeal. Raw denim, beard balm, and hardy jackets are just
some of the fine products they sell and specialize in.”

Silk Road Spice Merchant

“The Silk Road
is a family business inspired by the senses. You are immediately
overwhelmed with an aroma of exotic spices as you walk into the bright
shop reminiscent of an old merchant’s stand. The store is filled with
smells, flavors, and vibrant colors, instilling a love of cooking and
experimentation with unusual ingredients. It’s a sensory overload, and
it's wonderful.”

Knifewear

“This
is a store built on true passion, much like the Japanese chef knives
they sell. As soon as you speak to the owner, Kevin Kent, you can't help
but be energized and excited to be there. He began selling handcrafted
Japanese knives out of a backpack on his bicycle while working as a chef
many years ago. Since then, Knifewear
has expanded to include five Canadian stores plus occasional pop-up
stores across the country. The knives are spectacular, like art, and
watching someone sharpen and tend to them is something worth stopping by
for.”

Fish Creek Provincial Park

Fish Creek Provincial Park
is a popular spot in Calgary, located across the southern side of the
city. It is one of the largest urban parks in North America, stretching
19 km (12 mi) from east to west. It is the perfect escape from the busy
and populated streets of Calgary without having to leave city limits.
Whether you are looking to walk, hike, bike, take a dip, or just partake
in some birdwatching, there is a path that will get you there. If
you’re quiet enough, the residing deer might even stop in to say hello.”
